Saturday dog food purchase

Today we went to the farmer's market Saya had a lot of fun meeting people and kids she met a little toddler she loved.

Farmer's market doesn't  allow dogs in the market, but it's OK if they're in the sidewalk which is fine by me she still gets to mee people who likes dogs.

A lot of distractions people, musicians, and so on. She did well during training watching me when asked, sit, and come when called. I didn't let her off leash I just told her to stay went to end of her leash then asked her to come and she came right away.

So sad they don't allow dogs, but I understand due to rude dog owners who bring their dog who don't behave well or are scared in the crowd.

Saya she does fine in crowds she follows me and when I'm getting stuff at the stall I have her sit and she stays sitting and won't bother people unless they show interest in her.
Saya waiting for me when I got stuff this was from another time though.
The other farmer's market it allows dogs, but it's on wednesday and mom works long hours during the week so we can't go then.

I'm fine with that Saya still enjoys it and it helps get her used to noise like music and people.
We went to butcher and I got her 10lbs of chickens hearts for $16 which is a good deal. Should last Saya for while. Yummy.
We also headed to a dog grooming place to check it out has some nice items like dog collars, leashes, harness and dog bathing stuff, brushes and even the honest kitchen.

I got the Love formula Saya tried the Keen formula and Love she seemed to like the Love formula more, but she ate both find.

Though I did screw up and added bit more water then the free sample asked for made it really soupy so probably filled her up. Good to be hydrated though. hehe
I still love raw diet I don't think she'll ever be off of it, but I thought the honest kitchen be nice for small snack and to put her joint supplements in. I enjoy raw and it's helped Saya a lot with her health.

Plus if we ever go camping it's make a nice meal. I'll probably add caned sardines with it for more yummy food too.

Here's a cute picture showing how tired Saya was.

August 4th meat haul

Saturday August 4th I went to the farmer's market and got Saya couple things, went to Asian market, and Marsh grocery store too.

I bought beef tongue and lamb ribs at the farmer's market, two packs of Pacific Saury, one pack of mackerel, and dried anchovy, I got pack of pork chops and pork shoulder roast at the grocery store it was on a decent sale and I needed pork anyways.

Everything here cost me $61.49 which I think is decent for what I got.

Weight on everything is about 289.71oz.

Lamb rib weighed 2.23lbs, beef tongue 1.69lbs, two Saury weighed18.34oz each, mackerel weighed 14.01oz, pork chops weighed 87.52oz and pork shoulder roast weighed 88.78oz. or something like that..
These fish have their heads and organs too which is a bonus they also have same fish gutted and no heads. I get these since they have extra goodies in them Saya seems like the organs too.

She sometimes eat the who fish or she'll leave the head part for another time when ever she eats it she will usually start with the tail and eat to the head or she'll eat from the stomach area then tail and head.

When she was pretty new to raw she was used to chicken, pork, beef liver and kidney I got these fish for her she was in a picky phase and it took her a while to get used to it. I mean it's much different then a piece of liver or boneless pork and so on..

She would usually lick it a lot and then just eat tiny bit and not want anymore I just bagged up and put in the freezer for next time and she eventually got the taste for it. Now she loves the fish.

She also used to not like to eat it's head for the longest time I had to put a bit of peanut butter on the head to convince her to eat the fish's head. lol

So glad she eats the head no issue.

The mackerel has it's head, but no guts it comes with two mackerel in the pack. I love how much variety the Asian market it's mostly with fish, squid, octopus, they do have pork and beef, but none of the meat is what I'd want..

The fish is sold at good prices.. $5 and some change for a pack of four pacific saury..

They also sale kimchi, dried squid, shrimp, pollock, anchovy, dried seaweed, fresh seaweed or whatever, and variety of miso, tofu, rice, and various sauces and cooking items.

I had mom get some seaweed so we can put it in the miso soup when we make it.
The soup tasted good with it in it usually we put spinach instead since normal stores don't have it.

I never new the place had it, but who knows maybe I wasn't looking good enough.

Beef tongue! I had some in the freeze, but was getting low so I got one I have plenty of heart on beef and lamb..

Not much to say on it except Saya used to not like beef tongue when she was new to raw she would lick it take a exploratory bite to see if it was good and she didn't seem to like it.

She did same with beef heart so maybe it was a texture thing plus could be because I gave her the whole beef tongue to mess with she might been overwhelmed by it's size. haha

I kept offering the tongue and heart and in snack sizes frozen she seemed to eat heart and tongue bit better frozen.

Now she eats it frozen, thawed or cooked she don't care anymore which is good.

I got lamb ribs from the farmer I usually get them from a butcher and they're usually smaller..

I forgot how much it cost for the ribs it cost me $17 for the ribs and beef tongue so maybe it was $14 or something? I dunno. I need write down price of each item next time.

I plan to try keep better track of what I buy so I can post how much I spend each month.

I cut each rib so she each gets one rib as part of a meal.. I'll give it with boneless meat or organ or something.

She loves lamb ribs. :)

One farmer at the farmer's market will have ewe soon which is nice it's an adult female sheep I believe might be wrong..

She has liver, tongue, kidneys, and heart plus ground meat of it. I'll probably get some she is selling it at a good price.

Unfortunately with this dry weather farmer's been having issues with crops which isn't good. :\

The farmer with the ewe had issue with a weasel getting into the chicken coop and killing some of the chickens and got some of the ducks too.

I hope they can weasal proof the coop..

One thing about having chickens they do bring in predators.
Saya's pork chops. :)

I got it all cut up and portioned into meal size or half meal size..

I portioned everything and put them in big ziplock bags in the freezer in a way they don't touch so once they're completely frozen I can just take one small one or big meat to thaw.
It's a bit of work, but I don't mind.

Here's a picture how I do it it took two big bags and three little bags to do it. Once it all froze completely I put all the meat in one ziplock bag.
Here's her pork shoulder roast I doesn't have skin on it like the one I got last time, but it's still nice. When I first got pork shoulder roast this is the kind I usually get sometimes it'd have tiny bit of skin on it sometimes not.

One I got that had a lot of skin was a big pork shoulder roast it didn't even fit in ziplock bags I have.. Luckily I keep the plastic bags that the farmer's use to put the veggies in when selling them. It was big enough for it..

I like the skin because it makes it harder to get to the meat and is very chewy and good for the teeth, but this pork roast provides a good work out too.
Here is the big pork shoulder roast. It was huge lasted Saya for long time.

Bite marks from Saya.

She eventually got through the skin of coarse she ate from the bottom where the meat is and worked on the skin and stuff.

People ask is it ok to feed something that has been thawed and frozen multiple times? This roast is way to big for her to eat in one or two times.. It took her long time to finish it.

I first gave her the pork roast in 10/03/2011 and her last meal of it was 5/15/2012.

I so wish I bought two of them when they had that sale.. 88cents lb is a good deal or maybe it was 99cents lb either way good deal..

Here's what it looked like after Saya grind up some bone on the jointed parts..

The meat didn't seem to go bad from thawing and refreezing no smell or anything I thawed it and fed it and put back in freeze once she was done with it.

I won't be getting anything till my chicken feet from the farmer. Hope to get lots of them.

Farmer's market, smelt and fasting

Raw smelt
Yesterday we went to the farmer's market I didn't buy anything mainly went so Saya could meet many people and kids she loves going.

She has been doing great she is getting better about not being so nervous about the small bands playing.

There was a poodle or bichon frise or something that was tied to the pole while her owner ate in the restaurant. The dog seemed healthy and happy she was very friendly and liked Saya.

Saya liked the poodle they both greeted nicely still sad the dog was tied up it had water, but still.. The restaurant used to have outside seating area, but it was gone..

I love eating in outside area if I had saya i'd be sure to find one that allows dogs not leave her like that.

We went to the butcher and they had smelt! They haven't had it for a while so I grabbed two bags I kinda wished I bought the last two, but the two bags should be enough for a while.

Saya loves fish and she loves smelt thought it'd be nice to give her smelt again since only fish she has gotten has been her saury, caned sardines, caned mackerel, caned salmon, and caned tuna.

Saya eating her Saury

I only have one Saury left it's a type of fish that people eat I cooked two for myself the meat tasted good, but the organs bitter.. I gave the organs to Saya. lol

I need to make another trip to the Asian market to buy more Saury, mackerel, wakame, and miso I love the store the workers are pretty nice and the prices are nice.

Saya eating a cornish hen
This picture her is of Saya eating her cornish hen I stuffed it with ground bison, chicken gizzard, heart, beef liver, and kidney. What a meal! lol

Took her a week to eat it all she'd eat the legs some ground meat, next day ate two wings, a bit of ground etc. still she was done.

I did that two times when she was first starting raw. I think I'll try it again soon to see how she does.

Saya at 9 or 11 weeks
Fasting is something some raw feeders do sometimes it's because the dog had a tummy upset or something like that sometimes it is because they feed a gorge fast type diet.

I try to fast Saya once a week it seems to help her. On days she fast she never acts like she is extremely hungry or anything..

She does gets treats sometimes from training or something like a chicken foot, egg, or caned fish.

I also do fasting or just a small meal if she has eaten a big meal like a whole saury fish(6oz), whole prey quail(8oz)or pork roast(9oz or so).

Most food she has eaten at once has been a turkey drumstick I believe it weighed 16oz and she ate it all. I just fasted her and day after fast she gotten 3oz of boneless pork.

Not much going on

Saya wearing my Junpei Iori baseball cap
Nothing much happened this Friday I slept in a bit, worked outside a bit, walked the dogs and then me and my mom went saw the Harry Potter film I really loved it.

I need to read the books on it..

Saya playing tug with the kids
Saturday we might go to the farmer's market to get some granola and maybe a veggie or fruit. Don't have much money so mom doesn't want to buy much.

I just spent money on the cranimals stuff, but still has money. I might buy a beef tongue for Saya. Still have plenty of beef, pork and lamb heart, beef, pork and lamb liver..

If the bison people are there I might check their stuff out.. They sell nice bison steaks, ground, roasts also has liver, rocky mountain oysters(nicer term for bison male B***), but the times I've gone they just had the meat maybe I can ask for them to bring the organs the next time so I can buy some for variety.

Saya never had rocky oyster before so dunno how'd she like them gross to think about, but I'm sure wolves and other carnivores eat that kind of stuff nothing goes to waste.. I'm sure it has some good type of protein and vitamins in it.. I'd probably just give it twice a month or something..

The bison place also sells smoked bison bones for dogs, but I never buy those I prefer kind that has lots of yummy meat..

Saya's fancy collar I got from Madison WI shiba picnic auction
I dunno if we even go to the farmer's market my mom kinda wants to just relax which is fine by me.

If we go I'll probably bring Saya even if they don't allow dogs at it I love bringing her I just stick to the sidewalks so she is not in the farmer's market.

I've been doing that since they started no dogs rule which sucks since she was a well behaved dog and always stuck by my side never went to people even when they showed interest in her she waited for me to say go see them.

Sad how bad dog owners can ruin it for the good owners.

Saya is so adorable with her collar
Even though they have signs on both sides dog owners still walk their dog through the farmer's market to buy things. Sign says no dogs under health code or something like that..

I'm afraid if dog owners keep doing this they'll get even mad at me for bringing Saya on the side walk..

The farmer's market is in the street the area I walk on is the sidewalk and is far from the vendors. I enjoy walking in the down town area and Saya seems to enjoy it.

We usually sit on the bench where the farmer's market is to wait for my mom to get done so she watches Saya while I look around.

finally decent weather!

Saya hiding out in mom's new furniture
This week has been crazy! So rainy and stormy tornado warnings, watches etc.

The dog park we go to has been flooded from all the rain hopefully we get some dry weather.

This weekend we'll probably go to the park to walk around instead which is nice the dogs love walking in the park.

Saya's been doing good she was at the vet recently to have her ears checked and to get a shot since she'll be boarded soon.

She behaved so well when getting her ears checked and the shot she didn't shiba scream at all the vet said she was the most well behaved shiba they've had.

She also got weighed and she now weighs 21lbs she doesn't look fat so it must be gained muscle.

Yesterday she ate 9oz of pork roast and today she just got a chicken liver.

I plan to take them for a nice walk in the field which I hope stays clear and doesn't rain..

Farmer's market will open in May which is great! I love buying the meat for me and Saya.

Hopefully after the Louisiana trip we'll start going to it.

Sadly the farmer market doesn't allow dogs anymore probably thanks to the few jerks who bring dogs who don't behave. =(

Last year was the first year they did it coarse people still brought their little small dogs and some brought their big dogs too.

What made me mad was this one owner of a Pomeranian she had him on a long  leash about 20 feet of leash I believe. that dog walked everywhere got in people's way and even went and peed on the vendor's stall! I mean gross!

One lady at the farmer's market had a old looking pug that had long nails I mean they were long they started to curl it made me a bit sick inside to see the poor pug like that..

I loved the farmer's market it's great place to get meat, veggies and fruit from different local farmers lot of them have pretty good deals on their roasts, ground meats, organs and stuff.

When Saya was old enough had her shots I brought her to the market to meet people probably why she is so well behaved in public places and likes people is from going to the farmer's market.

I'd always made sure she peed and pooped before bringing her there and made sure she got some exercise too so she wasn't too crazy.

Sad other dog owners couldn't do the same.

I still plan to bring Saya at each farmer's market I go to I'll just walk on the side streets by it she got plenty of attention last year when I brought her. Once my mom was done buying her stuff I'd then go buy Saya her meats and organs.
